The Double Cup Debate

double cup, cardboard sleeve, tim horton's, coffee,

Tim Horton's has recently introduced 'the sleeve', a corrugated cardboard copycat of what Starbucks has done for years, effectively replacing my gorgeous double cup security blanket, in turn (essentially) ruining the caffeine experience of two very dedicated customers.

I understand their reasoning - really, I do. Saving the world and all that jazz. And I love the world. Of course I want to save it.  BUT, I'm also like a child with a favorite sippy cup who just doesn't want to use that other 'less awesome' cup because somehow/someway it just doesn't make things taste as good.

double cup, cardboard sleeve, tim horton's, coffee, It's my husband's fault. He started the whole double cup things for me. Probably because he's crazy. Not psychopath crazy but count the stairs (and count the beats and 'straighten that picture frame or the earth will explode!') crazy. There is a method to his madness - sort of. But reality is, I think his only true reason is that he likes to line things up - as he does with the seams of his coffee cups. "Double double, double cupped, please!" And then he'll pull them apart and twist them around until their seams are aligned and his lid is perfectly placed to keep the seams visible...

*cue the straight jacket!*

(I couldn't even take a true picture of a double cup because they wouldn't give it to me - this is my medium stuck in his extra large for demonstration purposes.)

It's more than alignment for me. I like to nurse a coffee. It's not unusual for me to make one cup last from the drive in to work until almost noon. Two cups provides double the insulation and keeps that drink hot so much longer.  A sleeve? We've lost steam by 10 am!

And, let's be honest - there's just some ergonomic beauty that confirms the rightness of the world when my lips can rest between those two cup lips... shall we say, kissing the java?

This is really just worthless dribble (not unlike my cold coffee at 10 am). I don't imagine any argument I can make could cause change, nor should it - what do I know?

  1. I feel I am one of those tree-hugging people responsible for this change. My favourite Tim Horton's moment was when I asked to have my tea in my re-usable mug, thereby forgoing the roll-up-the-rim cup. To my surprise, the cashier offered me the cup anyway. When I told her I didn't want it (and wouldn't let my friend have it) she looked at me in horror. Oh, Tim Hortons... I'm so glad to hear you are making a little more sense :)

    1. You're such a better person than I am! I have no problem admitting than I am being completely selfish and a reusable mug would solve all of my complaints - I'm just so forgetful and leave my mug at home - perhaps I should adopt a no mug? no coffee! rule

  2. Thanks for the blog Alanna. :) Changing your coffee routine cup etc can throw off your whole day! lol :) I like my stainless steel mug for my coffee. The bottom has come off it and water gets in the bottom through two little holes thus leaks a bit when the hot drink is poured in...I have yet to replace it. You just need to fully drain it properly or have napkin/cloth under to avoid water mess. Does not effect the drink quality/quantity. The part that leaks is a compartment at the base. I take it with me to work, en route travelling and it even fits in my bike water bottle holder for my short bike ride to work (seasonal for me). However my beef is that I have taken it to places that sell coffee and one place said that they would not pour into my mug as it did not say caution- hot! on the mug (protecting lawsuits). Therefore...I grind my own dark roast at home, use a French press (I'm the only coffee drinker thus far) and take it in my "sippy cup". lol ;) Although if you go to CC they will charge you for a refill instead of full price when you bring your own mug. :)

  4. As you were describing you husbands "count the stairs crazy" know that you are not alone. I too have a crazy husband. "Double, double, double cup," and seams all lined up. Brothers!

    1. After I posted this I had to pull Scott aside and say, "Just so you know, I kinda made fun of you today...about the coffee cup thing..." Good thing he has a sense of humor :) And, if you see my sister-in-laws comment above (Salina) you can see he comes by it honestly!
