Inspiring Me With A Ton Of Bricks

randy, pausch, brick walls, quote

Following the embarrassing angst of last night I find myself humbled. The outpouring of encouragement was an incredible pick-me-up and taught me beautiful lessons in humility. You are there. You do care.

Thank you.

One writer friend, in a private get-off-your-butt-and-stop-feeling-sorry-for-yourself (while still managing to be oh-so-kind-and-supportive) message, sent me this quote:

The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.
Randy Pausch

This hit me. Like a ton of bricks. {See what I did there?}

So I googled Randy Pausch. Sadly, he passed away in 2008 from pancreatic cancer but that didn't stop him from leaving behind a beautiful legacy of inspiration. Any man who brings up headlines like  'The Dying Man Who Taught American's How To Live' must certainly have something good to say.

And he does.

I understand that you probably don't have a spare hour and sixteen minutes to listen to what he has to say but I'll leave it with you anyway - because it inspired me and maybe someday you'll come back to this when you have a moment and it will inspire you too.

Watch out walls! If I can't bring you down on my own I have it on good authority that Kijiji is a gold mine when it comes to sledge hammers!

Perhaps this pearl of wisdom from Randy's lecture should become my new creed: "Show gratitude... Don't complain; just work harder... Never give up."
